With the ever-changing landscape and scrutiny, it is now more than ever necessary to properly code radiology services by documenting and ensuring the radiology exams are complete. This includes ensuring that CPT and ICD-10 coding is done in accordance with the official coding guidelines and the Center for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) policy.

RBMA offers year-round coding programming to keep you up to date on Medicare policies and coding changes for diagnostic and interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, proper coding principles by modalities, and general reimbursement pros and cons.

RBMA Summer Coding AI Series

Session Details

Leveraging AI for Enhanced Coding Practices and Professional Growth

This series of sessions is designed to explore the transformative role of AI in radiology coding. Participants will gain insights into how AI not only preserves but also enhances the roles of professionals by improving accuracy, efficiency, and career opportunities. Through the following sessions, attendees will discover the integral role of AI in coding and how it can be leveraged to foster professional growth and improve operational practices in the healthcare industry.

Embrace AI and Advance your Career: A Professional Development Perspective
July 23, 2024 | 1-2 p.m. ET
Presented by Karna Morrow, CPC, RCC, CCS-P

It is natural to be skeptical of automation that claims to do your job (coding); however, AI will allow you to enhance your current skills and improve your career path. This session will dispel the myth that AI will replace coders and focus on how AI can be leveraged to improve coding practices. A detailed presentation will be followed by a 10–15-minute interactive Q&A session, encouraging participants to explore the practical benefits of AI in their career path.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the differences within the AI world (NLP, CAC, ML, etc.).
  • Identify ways automation can assist coders in their day-to-day tasks.
  • Describe opportunities for coders to take their skills in a new direction with AI.

Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Coding: A Panel Discussion
July 25, 2024 | 12:30-2 p.m. ET
Moderated by Melody W. Mulaik, MSHS, CRA, CPC, CPC-H, FAHRA, RCC; Panelists: Stacie Buck, RHIA, CCS-P, CPCO, CIRCC, CCC, RCC, RCCIR, Rob Gontarek, & Dan O'Meara

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been utilized in the code assignment process for radiology services for over 2 decades. While technologies and approaches may vary, the end goal is to augment the work of human coders to maximize their skills. This session will be an interactive panel of engaged RBMA vendors that offer AI technologies for code assignment of radiology services.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the different approaches and technologies available for AI code assignment for imaging services.
  • Understand the considerations taken into account during system technology changes, upgrades, etc.
  • Understand how humans and technologies must collaborate for maximum quality and efficiency.

Ensuring Correct Coding for AI Technologies in Imaging
July 30, 2024 | 1-2 p.m. ET
Presented by Melody W. Mulaik, MSHS, CRA, CPC, CPC-H, FAHRA, RCC

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely used in imaging for many years. Some technologies, such as CAD, are integral to current practices but most are still emerging. Navigating the coding challenges associated with these new technologies is key to ensuring accurate and compliant billing practices.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how the AMA categorizes AI technologies from a coding perspective.
  • Understand the timing and requirements for the code development process at a high level for Cat I and III codes.
  • Understand which imaging AI technologies have existing procedure codes and when unlisted codes must be applied.
