Description
The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, called for the use of Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs) to identify and recoup overpayments to healthcare providers. Since 2005 CMS has contracted with private entities to these audits on their behalf. This once-pilot program is slated to be rolled out nationwide by 2010. In some facilities these contractors have identified millions of dollars in overpayments. In 2010 RACs will be reviewing claims for 2007 – 2009.
